Astrophysics (Varian 2)
Project Overview

This page is under construction.

History: Located along the west side of the Hewlett and Packard Quadrangle, the existing Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory (HEPL) is a collection of buildings built primarily during the 1940s and 1950s to house high-energy physics experiments and

the University’s first atomic accelerator.  In its present state, HEPL serves as an independent laboratory under the Dean of Research providing high-bay space and clean rooms.  Current programs in the HEPL complex include astrophysics projects, located in each of the three end station buildings, as well as administrative and dry laboratory space in the North building and annexes A and B.  Long-range plans for the area call for the demolition of HEPL to provide future sites for potential new buildings.

To that end, the new Astrophysics Building project will accommodate programs displaced from HEPL North, End Station I, HEPL Annex A and HEPL Annex B buildings, as well as provide additional expansion space for the Astrophysics Program.  The new facility is envisioned to encourage multidisciplinary interaction among theoretical and experimental physics, astrophysics, cosmology and engineering.

Scope:  Astrophysics Building The Astrophysics Building will be located on the open lawn south of the existing Varian Physics Building. The building will have a total of 68,000 gross square feet on four floors, with two floors above grade and two floors below grade. The building’s overall massing and architectural character will be compatible to the buildings in the Hewlett and Packard Quadrangle and is intended to have a similar architectural character to the adjacent Gordon and Betty Moore Materials Research Building. Present plans call for connections to the existing Varian Building at the first basement level and via a roof deck at the second floor of Astrophysics Building. The program provides generic laboratory space with individual lab fit-ups and moves funded separately by the departments. End Station III Buildout The project also includes the renovations to the existing End Station III to accommodate current programs in HEPL North and End Station I. The scope of the End Station III renovations involves only ADA and code and life safety required upgrades that are necessary for individual fit-out projects. Specific requirements for relocated programs from HEPL North and End Station I are not included in the scope of the End Station III renovations and will be funded from other school or department sources. HEPL Demolition The HEPL complex west of the Hewlett and Packard Quadrangle will be demolished upon completion of the new Astrophysics Building.
