Barnum Family Center
Project Overview

History: The existing Old Bookstore building is composed of three structures built over a period of 70 years.  The original structure (3,485 gross square feet) was designed by A.B. Clark in 1905 and constructed in 1913 as the campus’ third bookstore.  At approximately the same time, a smaller building was constructed across a very narrow alley from the east wall of the Old Bookstore to house a candy store that shared its space with the YMCA and a shoe repair shop.  We assume that these two structures were joined together in 1929 when the bookstore expanded.  In 1936, the exterior was remodeled with new doors and windows, and a major interior renovation occurred in 1967.  There have been only two tenants of the building since it ceased to be a bookstore in 1960--the Western Civilization Library (1960-1967) and the Career Planning and Placement Center (CPPC) (1967-2001).

The 1967 renovation converted the buildings to administration and office space for the CPPC.  In 1985, the CPPC expanded the building with a 950 gsf addition to the east, facing the Meyer Library Quad area, bringing the total gross square footage of the entire building to 8,328.  A fire in the east addition occurred on May 26, 2001 rendering the building uninhabitable.  CPPC then moved temporarily to Bakewell and eventually moved to its permanent location in the new Student Services Center.  The Old Bookstore building has been reassigned to the School of Education, which also occupies Cubberley Hall and the Center for Educational Research at Stanford (CERAS).  Upon completion of the proposed project, the facility will house the Barnum Family Center for School and Community Partnerships.

Scope:  The Old Bookstore is among the last unreinforced masonry structures on campus to be seismically upgraded per the requirements of the Santa Clara County URM Ordinance.

The scope of this project will include seismic strengthening and renovation of the existing facility.  The fire-damaged 1985 addition will be demolished, and replaced with a new building that will expand the entire building by 2,337 gsf.  The total project square footage is 10,665 square feet, and will include closed and open office spaces for faculty and staff, conference space, and meeting rooms.
